Thursday 16th September, 2021 2120

You know you are viewed as decrepit when you are supposed to start work and they are telling you to take it easy.

Work for me starts next Thursday. They want me to stay in hospital for tests. For what? A Zimmer frame?

If for one moment I thought it was anything but a money-making exercise I might acquiesce. They simply want to milk it. Anyway, it turned out they didn't have any spare beds anyway! I declined regardless.

They have given me a medicine (well several) which is taken after mixing in a glass with water. Fungi-based and as much as I enjoy mushrooms, drinking that concoction I do not enjoy the hallucinogenic effects that come with it.

I am making light of what may or may not be a serious situation for me. As for what transpired both whilst the school posse was here and subsequently, I have eschewed the magic mushroom stuff I'm supposed to take so we shall see.

  4. Hi Vaughan, I think it will be a few more days before he's upto that. He is in the ICU with an oxygen mask on. His sister spoke with him today but it was pretty much a one way conversation.

  5. Update from the hospital on Steve prior to the one week national holiday:- And now Steve’s symptom of disturbance of consciousness is getting worse. I asked the doctors just now, they said Steve would stay in ICU for the whole National holiday since his condition is really not good now.

  12. Hi All, Steve is still in the ICU and making slow progress he is still being fed by a tube to the stomach and is still often delirious. They hope to move him to a general ward next week and we will see how he gets on from there. Seems like it will still be awhile before he can post himself.

  13. Thanks for keeping everyone updated on the Blog Roland. You're a star!

I'd just like to add that from the extensive list of medical conditions the Doctor has discovered, most are related to about 3 conditions that Steve has had for many years, and taken medication for. All that's left is the UTI and a bad chest infection, and probably withdrawal from smoking and drinking. It's quite normal to have delirium with a bad infection, and it's very similar to dementia but thankfully reversible. Although Steve is getting stronger each day and is very alert and chatty, the content of his conversations are very mixed and confusing to anyone listening. This is nothing new I hear you say (haha)...but until that starts to clear he won't be in a fit state to move onto a ward and accept help from a Carer. At this moment he is quite resistant to help and keeps trying to pull his tubes out. Without really knowing it. Fingers crossed it won't be much longer until he's back to his usual self.

Thank you to everyone who's asked after him and sent good wishes...I will of course pass this on to Steve as soon as I'm able to. X

  14. Also, part of the reason this happened was due to lack of sustenance as you may have read about over the last few weeks. For some reason Steve wasn't able to keep food down, and this gas lead to severe weakness and dehydration..followed by the UTI and a chest infection, then collapse. He's still not out of the woods, but he is improving every day.

  16. Hi everyone, apologies for lack of updates but Steve took a turn for the worse a few days ago and we actually thought he was checking out! Thankfully he pulled through and with everything that now needs to be put in place, we've now had to start a Fundraising page for him. Please read his story and help if you can.
Sincere thanks from all Steve's family xx

  20. Unfortunately due to another Covid lockdown in the area where Steve is in Hospital, it looks like it may be another week or so before they will allow anyone in. In the meantime I'm hoping he is getting physically stronger and able to start clearing his confusion...but I'm doubtful as not many speak alEnglish in ICU or on the ward.
In the meantime all we can do is keep sharing the link to his fundraising page and try and reach the target so we can then get him out of there when the time comes.
Thank you for your continued support X

  22. Thank you Olivia, unfortunately we are still waiting fotr flight restrictions in Hong Kong to be lifted... but at least Steve is making good progress with his health and mental capacity.
I'll update again in the GoFundMe page once we can get a date for him to travel back to the UK.

  23. Hi everyone, it's been a while since any updates on Steve but hopefully you've been able to follow his progress on the GoFundMe page.

Just to summarise, Steve is now in a Nursing/Care Home and seems to have improved his mental capacity a bit since being able to get out of bed and into a wheelchair... and the independence to come and go from his room when he pleases. This means he can sit and have meals in the Dining Room and/or sit in the main Lounge if he wishes to be with others. He still isn't able to stand or walk unaided, but this is a start.

I'm currently waiting on Social Services to sort out how/where we're going to move Steve to a more permanent place to live, but for now he's being well cared for and the staff love spending time with him. Maybe becuase he's much younger than other residents, or because of his charming wit and great sense of humour... but they've said they will miss him once he leaves!

Once I get access to his emails I'll hopefully be able to help Steve send some messages out to everyone, but for now that's proving a bit difficult due to his memory of passwords... but all in good time. If you have a specific message to send to him please feel free to write it in here or contact me directly.

    Many thanks and take care,
    Sarah x
