Wednesday 18th December, 2013      2200

Not a lot to tell except that now our school website is showing an entry for Jim’s performance in Beijing which can be found on the following link. Those with Google Chrome can easily translate and get the gist. Despite not getting through round two he still came away with a first prize (this is China!) and from what my students tell me he has been invited to go again next year after he has graduated in order to act as a host for the 2014 competition, so well done Jim and your CV just got a whole lot better!

Today I had arranged to break the back of one of my big classes which I had to start examining today in order that I could finish early next week for the tug-o-war competition. Not that I particularly want to take part in it at my age, especially as it takes part on the road not grass and there is no teamwork (I would love to show them how to hold and shout “Eee, arrr, san, PULL!” so they could actually do it right and win, but just before I went to start the exams Prof Fang’s assistant teacher called me to give me the bad news.

The organiser said as we weren’t part of the department we couldn’t be on the team.

So hold on. We recently had a meeting at which the vice-chancellor clearly stated they want the foreign teachers to feel part of the university community. If we are not members of our own department then what ARE we members of????

I went to see Jane (the assistant) and told her that if we weren’t part of anything then Ollivier and I wouldn’t be part of the teachers concert. That wouldn’t matter to the organiser as he is only looking after the tug-o-war. Is he a teacher? Yes but he’s the head of the teachers union in school and you are not members. What? Sign us up to the union then - we’ll join! My parting comments were to ask how big this guy was and say that come hell or high water, on Christmas afternoon we were going there and we were going to pick up the rope and I would like to see the fellow move us off it.

We are now part of the team.

Tonight I took Yvonne for the long-promised Japanese meal which we both enjoyed - she so much enjoyed it she is going to suggest that her roommates go there for a girlie night out. I attach three photos (two of the “fire ice cream”). Kevin has informed me there is no way my video can be uploaded to the internet because it is 5.7Gb so I am afraid it is impossible. I have however now on my laptop the original rejected version sans music which is nowhere near as good as the finished article but is only 1Gb and so currently I am trying to upload it to YouTube. With internet speeds here it could take some time but I will hold off posting this for a while and if successful will include the link.

Nope - now 2330 and still working on it - hopefully in time I will succeed.
