Ok
no blog from me tonight, just two entries from two of my students
submitting their oral assignments. My assignment was for them to tell
me about their spring festival. It was perhaps rather naïve of me to
think they would how say how homelife has been and how they are making the
best of it. It will take ten minutes of your time to listen and I
only wish the trolls would listen too. The second one really hit
me.

Well, she did get 10/10. No excuse now for not speaking out in class when we actually get back to normal.
ReplyDeleteI thought they did well. Maybe not stick to the subject as you expected but this virus is traumatic for kids that have been brought up to believe that families MUST be united at Spring Festival. I think the content of Una's speech demonstrates that as there was no flippancy and the virus dominated her thoughts on this Spring Festival, and always will do.

The thing is Will they did! It was just me expecting something else! God knows what the rest of the submissions will be like!
ReplyDeleteI know how important spring festival is for families, been to a couple and always felt like a foreigner regardless of the superb hospitality shown to me. Bit like being the only stranger at a Christmas dinner in the UK - you can eat as much as you like and drink what you will but at the end of the day you are still not family!
These kids are probably nineteen and of course they've never experienced anything like this. You and I have probably both had keenly anticipated events cancelled due to external events and we have brushed them off as part of life.
This is their first and has probably hit them hard.
