After my labours last night on the grinder I found it hard to stir this morning even when the alarm went off at eleven! And my arm is still aching, I kid you not.
But stir I did, for I had to scour the world’s news sites for interesting things to talk about in class. I had to leave a few minutes earlier than I would normally, I owed Suzy 70y for my shopping and I guessed she would need 30y for posting the sausages to Kevin.
Just my luck, the atm centre was bereft of power so I couldn’t get any cash. The day had started badly and I hoped it wasn’t a harbinger of things to come.
On the contrary, on the school bus on the way in I received a text from Janet advising I don’t need to make up classes on Friday, so all I have is the afternoon class - if they turn up that is.
Just before class Suzy and Sheila brought some of my shopping, they had left some behind as it was too heavy to carry! As it was, I think I had to lug about 15kg home with me but that should mean a lighter load on Thursday - one carton of Halls cough sweets I can leave in my office at least.
And then to my great surprise (hardly!) I walked into a full class! Can’t think why, it couldn’t possibly be the thought of an exam now could it?? I had thought the only time I would see them all together again would be at my party a week on Saturday. The only one missing was the boy who couldn’t speak English at all (and whom I stated months ago shouldn’t even have been there) and the general consensus is that he has left school completely and abandoned any notion of studying in Cyprus. Whilst I wish him well, I cannot think what possessed him (or whoever pushed him) to think he could survive and study in an English only environment.
The class went well indeed and although Tuesday is activity day I had decided they could watch part of a film instead. I want them to see everything I have before we finish (their last class is actually the 29th), Suzy came to me in the break and said everyone wanted to play the guessing game. The one where they draw pictures on the board and try to make their team get the correct answer. That surprised me but instead I gave them the same game, only miming famous people this time. They lapped it up. I think they are finally realising that an active class is an enjoyable one.
When we finished I went with Suzy and Sheila to find an atm, not because Suzy was desperate for the cash but because I needed some myself. Afterwards they went to a restaurant to have their dinner and post the bangers. My guess was pretty damned close, it cost 29y! Expensive but we chose the best delivery firm and the chap said Kevin might even get them tomorrow. Not bad if it happens because we are out in the middle of the desert - to me that means they will send it by air rather than train. The trains from here take days to get anywhere.
On the bus coming back the driver took his usual short cut and we went hurtling down a bumpy road, coming up fast on a black saloon with brake lights showing. It is hard to tell in China what peoples’ intentions are on the road. The driver could have been fishing around for a cigarette, answering the phone or anything. Something told me though that he was going to turn.
There were turnings left and right and I just KNEW he wanted to turn left. Unperturbed, our driver never slowed in the slightest and simply pulled out left to overtake. Just as the car commenced a left turn. That was even closer than the other day and had there been an accident I’m not sure my evidence would have helped our chap. Ok the other driver never indicated - they rarely do - but overtaking at or near a junction?
I know what I said yesterday about sausages but I am going to have sausage, egg and chips tonight for one simple reason. I have to know if they taste ok before Kevin gets his!
